Deoxyribonucleic acid
 Cell and Molecular Biology

is the study of life & the living cell
thru an analysis of the constituent
   molecules found within cells.
   Rhodopsin
"Life.. is a relationship between molecules."

                            Linus Pauling...his biography (1997 - p.542)
CMB is designed to construe the properties of the organism
by understanding the structure and functions of its
              constituent
molecules
in cells and their complex interactions.

CMB  encompasses  the  5  BIG  Ideas of Biology...

   1.  EVOLUTION:  organisms and their cellular & molecular components
have changed over time through selective evolutionary processes.

2STRUCTURE & FUNCTION:  living things are made of molecules,
whose spatial arrangement determines the function of systems.

   3.  TRANSFORMATION of ENERGY AND MATTER:
all living things acquire, use, and release matter and energy for
               cellular functions.

   4.  INFORMATION FLOW & STORAGE:  DNA and signal molecules
are exchanged and used among cells and organisms to direct
               their functioning.

   5.  SYSTEMS:  Living things and their parts are interconnected and interact
to influence each other on many levels of complexity.

Cell & Molecular Biology is a vibrant & exciting discipline.

           Today,
CMB is built upon disciplines as biochemistry and physiology,
            but draws from disciplines as
neurobiology, immunobiology, microbiology,

molecular genetics,
and developmental biology.

Today, the term “molecular biology” has a different meaning than it did 75 years
ago, when little was molecular. Today, there is little in contemporary biology
            that isn't molecular
CMB tries to connect molecules not just to reactions of
high specificity, but to intricate pathways concerned with cellular, tissue, and
organism homeostasis.   But, CMB must move beyond binding and catalysis to
encompass cellular morphogenesis, development, and physiology.

cell & molecular biology is a domain where biology, computer science, logic,
chemistry, quantum physics, and nanotechnology intersect, and it also provides
a natural connection between basic biological research and modern medicine.

Some Fundamental Questions Asked via CMB
?

what is a definition of Life ?

how do the properties of molecules contribute to Life

Since Life is manifest in the CELL...     these questions become...

        where did the molecules of
cells (& Life) come from ?
what is the origins of cells ?        The Origin of Cellular Life on Earth
what are the propertires of cells ?
how does an organism develop from single fertilized egg ?
with similar molecules what causes a great diversity of cells & life ?
how do  cells work - why do we get sick, grow old, die ?

Some Course Goals -

  1.  examine the details of the cell, stressing the fundamentals,
&  relationships between molecules and structure & function

  2.  generate an appreciation for how the

properties of molecules lead to the living condition

  3.  Observe some of the techniques & tools of CMB

"Although concepts and ideas occupy a central place in the grand sweep
of our understanding of the nature of the world around us, it is a mistake
to imagine ideas play a greater role than tools and techniques in achieving
scientific progress in cell & molecular biology.

Few scientific revolutions are concept driven."  [re: HGP].... John M. Thomas, 1994.

  4.  Recognize the integration of molecular systems to the creation of cellular function,
enzymatic pathways, signal molecules, and information flow.

  5.  write down your own goals for our course.
